NAFDAC Shuts Down Chinese Supermarkets, 8 Cosmetics Shops in Abuja Over Illegal Products
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed two Chinese supermarkets and eight cosmetics shops in Abuja for violating its regulations on the sale, distribution, and labelling of regulated products.
The enforcement, which took place in the Jabi District and Wuse Market areas, followed a series of consumer complaints about suspicious food and cosmetic products sold at the affected outlets.
According to NAFDAC officials, the two Chinese supermarkets—located on Mike Akhigbe Way and Ebitu Ukiwe Street in Jabi—were found selling unregistered food items with labels written entirely in Chinese. The agency noted that such practices breach Nigeria’s labelling policy, which mandates English translations on all regulated products sold within the country.
In addition to the supermarkets, NAFDAC sealed eight cosmetics shops in Wuse Market after discovering they stocked and distributed unregistered beauty and skincare products. Many of these items lacked proper labelling or approval numbers, raising health and safety concerns among unsuspecting consumers.
NAFDAC have continued to warn business owners and importers to comply strictly with its regulations or face similar sanctions. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public health by ensuring that only safe, properly labelled, and approved products are available in stores across the country.
