Renowned Nigerian musician and social commentator, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charlyboy, has opened up about the realities behind his 46-year marriage, offering a candid perspective that challenges romanticized views of long-lasting unions.

Speaking recently, the outspoken entertainer reflected on how people often perceive him and his wife whenever they appear together in public, noting that many assume their relationship is perfect and effortless simply because of its longevity.

“When people see me and my wife of over 46yrs, dem go think say we are stupidly in Love.
Humm, it’s not like dat ooo.
Some go say, ‘it’s good to marry your friend’
Some go say, ‘Dis na how I want my marriage to be’ referring to our longevity.”

Charlyboy, however, stressed that no marriage is flawless or divinely perfect from the onset, dismissing the notion that successful unions are “made in heaven.” Instead, he emphasized the importance of consistent effort, dedication, and emotional labour in sustaining a relationship over time.

“True true, no marriage is ‘made in heaven’
I emphasize that successful unions require hard work, commitment, and cultivation on Earth, no union is divinely perfect from the start.
Marriage is a fragile thing dat can easily crack. It is something built through effort, not just found.”

The veteran entertainer also cautioned against assuming that long-married couples are free of challenges, noting that every relationship has its own struggles, even if they are not visible to outsiders.

“Make una no dey look us like say we are free of problems ooooo.”

Describing his role within the marriage, Charlyboy portrayed himself as someone who continues to put in the work even during difficult moments, insisting that perseverance is key to sustaining a long-term union.

“As I dey so, am a champion manager, even when sometimes wey I no dey feel am again, I keep pushing.”

Concluding his reflection, the social activist affirmed his unwavering commitment to his marriage, describing it as a lifelong decision made with resolve and determination.

“Anyway, for us, we have decided to both die here.
Na over try dey worry me.”

Charlyboy’s remarks have since sparked conversations on social media, with many praising his honesty and realistic approach to marriage, especially in an era where relationships are often idealized online.
